Just been reading the Black Stratocaster threads........
« on: February 23, 2010, 09:30:52 AM »
I have a black stratocaster FCSC (that stands for F*****g Cheap SH***Y Copy) :D

But then again I'm VERY new to guitar playing. ;)

I tried many, many years ago (I'm 38 now) to teach myself to play but at the time I had other interests as well so never really got into it. Now my ten year old girl is having guitar lessons I thought I'd try and learn alongside her. She's learning acoustic guitar and we bought her a half decent guitar to learn with (Fender CD-60) as I didn't want her learning on a really cheap £40 pile of crap as it would sound awful and dishearten her.

Well after a couple of months of lessons, she's nearly mastered Wish You Were Here. She picks it up so much quicker than I do (so I guess it's true that you can't teach an old dog new tricks :( - or maybe you can, but it takes a lot longer for them to learn)

I'm a woodwind instrument player of old, used to play clarinet and saxophone and am a self taught keyboard player too. I found the keyboard relatively easy to learn. The guitar is a completely different kettle of fish I think. Or maybe it's just 'cos I'm older now, I dunno. But I'm gonna try and stick with it this time. I don't expect to ever get to gigging standard, it's mroe for fun playing at home and maybe for friends, so time will tell I guess.

I've got another copy, a copy Ovation roundback electro-acoustic that I've had for probably 16 or more years now that I am using to learn with Emily (that's my ten year old's name - yes, she was named after See Emily Play!).

I mainly want to learn acoustic I think, but Mrs SteveW bought me a cheap "electric guitar Kit" for Christmas, more as a laugh than as a serious intrument, so we've been having a play. It's OK (It's an Encore E6 strat copy), but far from brilliant - but as it's just for fun it'll do for the time being.

One question I do have though, that one of you may be able to answer, is when you move the pickup switch, which position selects which pickups? I've googled this, searched other forums (but not asked as yet) and haven't been able to find the answer.

So I wonder if there is anyone here that knows.

Thanks in advance :)

Assuming you have a 5 position switch, it works like this:

Position:
1 (fully down, away from you): bridge
2 bridge and middle
3 middle
4 middle and neck
5 neck

Neck = louder, mellower and warmer sound
Bridge = brighter, sharper sound.

Excellent, thanks Nick.

Now I know what's doing what. Not that it'll make me sound any better though, sadly :(
