Zappa Plays Zappa at the Pops
« on: March 26, 2010, 06:12:09 PM »
This is a coup for Chas. From the CMP website:

"CMP ENTERTAINMENT, is proud to announce ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA, a tribute to the legendary rock guitarist and composer FRANK ZAPPA, as the first act for the SUMMER ROCKS weekend. Zappa Plays Zappa will perform at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Sunday 25th July 2010, during the Summer Rocks weekend, part of The Liverpool Summer Pops Festival 2010. Tickets for this show will go on sale at 9am on Friday 26th March 2010."

For those that don't know, this isn't any old tribute band, it's Dweezil Zappa playing his father's music with some amazing musicians. They've had quite a few of Zappa's old players guest with them, including Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio and Napoleon Murphy Brock.

This topic doesn't seem to be getting much interest, but I've got to say last night's show was outstanding, one of the best gigs I've been to in a long time. The band comprises the most amazing stunt musicians, expertly executing some of the most difficult music ever written, and adding a load of Zappa-like humour into the mix.

5 stars.

Hi Nick!

great to see another ZPZ fan here, but a wee bit disappointed there only seems to be 2 of us :-\

I went to the Dublin gig last year and it was one of the best gigs I'd seen in a long time. After the show, the band did a kinda meet & greet while they disassembled their gear. I had a nice chat & a wee hug with the incredibly talented Scheila Gonzalez, my buddy took a couple of pics of me & Dweezil, the band signed my ticket yada yada.... it was a nice way to finish the night! Dweezil came across as a very unassuming guy, very down to earth.
They had a new singer, sadly Napolean Brock Murphy is gone. Dweez is just like his dad- he doesn't like paying his musicians too much, and Nap wanted a pay rise!

They played a stunning set of some of the best of Franks' music. Sadly, the promoter didn't do much promoting, there was a disappointingly small crowd & that means there's no irish gig this year. I'd been hoping to get over to Glasgow - the nearest gig for me, but work commitments mean I can't.

I heartily recommend this band to anyone who gets the chance to see them live. I'd also recommend the live DVD - a superb recording in HD with awesome sound.
